The Colombini family, founders of Fattoria dei Barbi, has owned land in Montalcino since 1352. They've developed an innate understanding and connection to the land which has allowed the family to become one of Montalcino's most revered producers. For centuries, their wines have been some of Montalcino's best. The 2017 Rosso di Montalcino is one of the estate's most versatile wines, that's great on its own or can be a perfect culinary compliment. In Montalcino, it's a Barbi world, and the Barbi wines will continue to do what they've done for centuries, enchant the palates of each and every quaffer.

Fattoria dei Barbi is among a prestigious group of estates that have played an integral part in writing the history of Italian wine. In fact, the estate is one of only five in Montalcino that has continuously operated for over 100 years. The Colombini family, one of the region’s most influential families, founded the estate in 1790. The estate is currently owned and managed by the 20th generation heir, Stefano Cinelli Colombini, who carries on constantly seeking innovation through research and the application of new techniques. This wine is made from the estate's younger vines, providing a fresh and approachable style that is ready to drink now!

Along with the Biondi-Santi family, the Colombini family helped build the reputation of Brunello di Montalcino as a wine of great quality and prestige worldwide. Fattoria dei Barbi is among the original producers of Brunello di Montalcino with bottles dating back to the 1892 vintage in its cellar. The estate, whose name is derived from “Barbo”, a reference to the seashell fossils found throughout the vineyards, received top awards at exhibitions all over Europe since the first vintages and was the first to export Brunello to the USA.

Aging: This wine spends 6 months in small oak barrels

Vivid ruby-red color with aromas of red berries, red currants, cherries, and notes of eucalyptus. The palate is fresh with soft tannins, medium body, bright acidity, and a long finish with slight menthol notes.

Delicate nose of dried flowers with leafy, peppery notes. Ripe, chalky tannins with amazing length, full of vibrancy and persistence. ~91 Decanter

Fattoria dei Barbi's 2017 Rosso di Montalcino is a gorgeous wine, and also one of the very few 2017s in which the ripeness of the vintage is not especially felt. Translucent and medium in body, with tons of Sangiovese character, Barbi's 2017 is flat-out delicious. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, cedar, wildflowers, spice, and mint all add shades of nuance.~90 Antonio Galloni
