2018 "Pretty" Chorey-lès-Beaune: 2018 Poulleau Pere Fils Chorey Les Beaune
Did you know that Burgundy produces just about a fifth of the wine that Bordeaux produces, but it has nearly twice as many protected designations? We find the best way to get to know the many Burgundian regions is to take it one bottle at a time. Today, it’s time to get to know the village of Chorey-lès-Beaune on the lower slopes of Côte de Beaune where elegant Pinot Noirthrives.
The 2018 Domaine Poulleau Pere & Fils Chorey-les-Beaune is from one of our favorite under-the-radar producersin Chorey-lès-Beaune, and in all of Burgundy. The Poulleau family has crafted quality Burgundian wines since the 1960s. Established by husband and wife Michel and Jacqueline, their son Thierry and his wife Florence have since taken the reins. Over 90% of the wine they produce is made from Pinot Noir grown throughout Burgundy. Simply put, they make great Burgundy wines, and they’re experts at producing reds that reflect the terroir from the regions they’re grown in.
This Burgundy is born from the red marl and silt soils where the 50-year-old vines grow in Chorey-lès-Beaune. The grapes are harvested manually, and the wine is aged in oak barrels. The result is a light, supple, and moderately tannic wine that’s elegant and approachable. A gastronomical wine, it pairs with salmon, roast poultry, and grilled meats or soft cheeses like Reblochon or Brie.
Drinks Business observed that the 2018 reds from Burgundy “are pretty now but should have the guts to last.” That’s exactly how we see this wine. It is pretty, and it has a good half-decade or more left in it. Its price makes it a fantastic bottle for your “getting to know the small regions of Burgundy” journey. Since this is such an amazing value for quality wine, it makes sense to buy more than one bottle. Drink one soon. Drink another in a year. Compare your notes.
Our price on this wine makes it even a better value. At over 20% off, this elegant Burgundy is less than $35. How’s that for value?!
Tasting Notes: Core black cherry and red raspberry, light graphite shavings, a touch of black olive and black tea combine with a tension that dances in the mouth. This is a really proud, elegant, svelte wine that should probably cost well over $50.
Demand for Burgundy is soaring. Demand for exemplary Burgundy at prices like this is even more so.
