Outstanding 96 Point Vintage: 2018 Chateau Montfollet Icone Blaye Cotes De Bordeaux

“This is a wonderful definition of what modern Bordeaux is all about and also of what the less famous appellations can achieve.”

That’s the summary Andreas Larsson—AIS’s 2007 Best Sommelier in the World—gave of the 2018 Château Montfollet Icone Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux, after raving on his YouTube “Tasted” channel about the wine’s “complex blend that achieves a good result” and the dense and concentrated wine’s “excellent palate.”

We concur. This iconic wine, the Château’s top cuvée crafted from its oldest vines in its very best parcels, comes from an outstanding vintage, one that was awarded 96 points by Vinous Media, who stated: "it is a very strong vintage that falls just short of being truly epic."

Château Montfollet is an outstanding family-owned artisanal winery in the heart of Blaye and Cotes de Bourgappellations. Two of the greatest value Bordeaux wine regions. Its vineyards are placed in an outstanding terroir on the slopes of red clay and limestone, overlooking the Gironde estuary, just in front of the prestigious Grands Crus de Margaux. The 148-acre vineyards are managed under sustainable practices and were recently certified with HEV Level 3.

Dominique Raimond, also known as the “man who makes Malbec sing,” is the proud owner and winemaker of the winery.  Bordeaux through and through, he was born and raised in the region and comes from a legendary winemaking family. Along with his words of immense praise, Larrson showed his appreciation for Raimond’s wine with a 92 point score. International Wine Challenge agreed with that score and was impressed with its “remarkably balanced.”

A blend of 60% Merlot, 10% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot, the wine has classic, old-world aromas with a modern palate with waves and waves of dark fruit, violets, and vanilla and a sophisticated, complex, plush, and refined finish. It’s simply divine.

It’s also simply an unbelievable value for the quality. BHW has the Lowest Price Anywhere on this wine we’ve fallen in love with. It’s over 25% off, and under $35—which is a crazy good price on a Bordeaux of this quality.
