A play is a work of drama–a theatrical performance–featuring secondary characters, main characters, protagonists, antagonists, etc. The main character, usually the protagonist, is the major player in a story, the focal point.
Today’s offer is definitely the main character (but with a secondary character’s paycheck): 2018 Chateau Meyney from Saint-Estephe. Although this wine hasn’t won any Oscars (...yet 😉 ), it has certainly been highly rewarded by some of the most prominent wine critics in the world. Let’s review a few:
“Focused, chewy, and layered. Fantastic effort here.” ~95 James Suckling.
“Rich and structured, powered by solid tannins as well as serious black fruits and youthful juicy acidity.” ~94 Wine Enthusiast.
“This is great quality and should be long-lived, with a rich palate, evenly balanced, and austere in all the right places.” ~94 Decanter
“Classy and layered, Meyney boasts fabulous depth and tons of character. Best of all, it is a tremendous value.” ~93 Antonio Galloni
Oh, and don't forget the vintage, cause 2018 was a hell of a year in Bordeaux, it was awarded 96 points by Wine Spectator, noting that the wines have a “terrific drive and definition.”
Chateau Meyney’s is surrounded by some prestigious neighbors, no other than Chateau Montrose (2nd growth) and Calon-Segur (3rd growth) which easily sell for over $150 a bottle. Ready for the cherry on top? Here it is: this Château’s winemaking is overseen by legendary wine consultant, Hubert de Bouard. Hubert is most known for being the winemaker of Saint-Emilion’s Premier Grand Cru Classé, Chateau Angelus, along with producing multiple 100 point wines since his winemaking career began in 1985.
The 2018 Meyney is an amazing value in St.Estephe that must be experienced. So what are you waiting for?
