Tuscany has become a front runner in the global wine market, largely on the back of Brunello di Montalcino and Super Tuscan wines. It is almost impossible to shop for wine without seeing these labels. But what about the smaller regions, the forgotten gems that continue to deliver stunning quality?
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is famous within Italy for producing high-quality wine but has played second fiddle to the Brunellos and Super Tuscans. Lucky for you–you have us–the BHW wine sleuths. We're here to bring you the 2016 Rubinoro Vino Nobile di Montepulciano delivering plenty of bang for your buck.
The 2016 Rubinoro comes from a region that was declared "the Kings of wines" in 1865 by Italian poet Francesco Redi. Vino Nobile was even a favorite of America's first fine wine expert, Thomas Jefferson, who said, “For the present, I confine myself to the physical want of some good Montepulciano…this being a very favorite wine and habit having rendered the light and high flavored wines of a necessary of life with me. It was most superlatively good.”
Vino Nobile directly translates to "noble wine." The wine's name is literally derived from its history of consumption where Kings, Queens, Popes, and Presidents would drink themselves under the table and confess their love for this Italian potion.
This wine may not have all the clout (noun. influence or power, especially in politics or business) that top producers in Brunello have, but the history of the wine speaks for itself. It's also coming from one of Tuscany's most successful vintages, Wine Spectator's 99 point 2016 vintage. If Thomas Jefferson was here today, he'd jump so high his toupee would catch big air.
This elixir is densely packed with fresh red fruits and well structured. This is a great go-to bottle if you aren’t sure of what to pair with your roasted meats or even your favorite Wu-Tang album.
